Night nannying for older babies provides a very similar service to that of caring for newborns, and a booking can be made to solely care for your baby over night if that is your requirement. However my attention is focused on successfully achieving a routine to include a long period of sleep overnight. For a younger baby I encourage an approximately 4 hourly feeding pattern during the day with an approximately 8 hour period of sleep overnight. For an older baby nearing their first birthday I am aiming for an 11/12 hour period of sleep overnight ensuring your baby is eating enough solids as well as feeds during the day to get all the nutrition he needs. Routines for babies who fall in the middle of this age bracket are based on their weight, any routine which is already established and of course at what stage they have reached with weaning. If your baby does not have an established bedtime routine it will take longer to encourage him to sleep through the night. It is also well worth noting that if your baby has special medical needs in relation to feeding or has had a traumatic start in their life the period of time they can be expected to go between feeds is significantly reduced. To establish a routine, where no routine is in place, can typically take 4/5 nights before you start to see the full benefits.
During my night with your baby I will feed your baby at feeding times, either when they wake or I will wake them. If you breastfeed I will bring your baby to you. If we are trying to establish a new routine and try new techniques I may require you to be involved during the night to guide you and to discuss with you how and why I am doing certain things. I can teach your baby how to sleep through the night but ultimately you need to be confident with the techniques I use to carry them out in my absence. Building a routine may include changes to your daytime routine to ensure your baby is eating/feeding enough during waking hours. It is also common for day naps to be altered or changed as daytime naps effect the quality of sleep over night. Under no circumstances will your baby be left to cry for long periods of time, however I may show you how to appropriately use the ‘controlled crying’ method if other techniques do not seem to be improving your babies sleep problem. I will also sterilise any bottles or feeding equipment ready for the next day and prepare bottles if required. In the morning I will ensure your baby is washed and dressed ready for the day unless you prefer me to leave your baby asleep.
I am not responsible for domestic cleaning, laundry or caring for older siblings whilst Night nannying. It is expected that some form of sleeping accommodation shall be provided, a spare bed, blow up mattress or sofa. I may require the use of a baby monitor if your baby’s room is far away from where I am sleeping. I am happy to share a room with your baby, however if we are trying to establish a routine teaching your baby to fall asleep and stay asleep in their own room this arrangement would not be suitable.
I can also offer you advice on breast feeding, mild childhood illnesses, weaning and what to expect from your babies sleep routine as your baby develops. If you have a concern or worry which I cannot directly help you with I will endeavour to find the source of support which may be able to.
